Brushing Methods That Can Harm Your Teeth
Our Los Angeles dentist recommends brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day. A quick brush and rinse is not enough, however. Proper brushing technique can keep your teeth clean while poor techniques may leave your teeth more susceptible to damage.
- Take your time. Rushing through your brushing regimen may not clean your teeth effectively. Brushing should last from two to three minutes or long enough to allow you to carefully brush the inner, outer and biting surfaces of your teeth.
- Brush at an angle. Brushing straight across can miss the plaque that builds up along the gumline, which can cause cavities or gum disease. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to remove it more effectively.
- Use the right toothbrush. Not all toothbrushes are equally effective. Use a soft-bristled nylon toothbrush to help protect your enamel from scratching. Electric toothbrushes can be more effective than manual toothbrushes, particularly if you have disabilities or poor fine motor skills.
- Never fail to floss. Brushing cannot reach the plaque and debris between your teeth, which is why flossing is so vital to your dental health. Floss every day to minimize your risks.
- Use fluoride. Ensure your toothpaste and any mouth rinse you use has fluoride. This mineral can help keep your teeth strong and kill bacteria.
Aggressive brushing can lead to worn enamel, gum damage and other dental health issues. Contact our dental office today to learn more about maintaining good dental hygiene or to schedule an appointment.
