Differences between Veneers and Caps
Dentists have a number of tools at their service to restore teeth that have been damaged through trauma or decay. Some treatment options can be confusing to patients, however, particularly when it comes to those that are fairly similar in design, such as caps and dental veneers. Both veneers and caps are used to restore teeth that are cracked, broken, chipped, stained or otherwise damaged or unsightly.
Caps are shells designed to fit over the entire tooth, or cap it, and protect it from further damage. A cap is generally used in cases when the structure of the tooth has been seriously compromised, and the tooth is broken, severely decayed or has had a root canal treatment. The cap restores the toothís function and appearance, and it is used primarily for dental health purposes. It can be made of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold or other metals. A cap can also be used with dental implants.
Porcelain veneers are porcelain shells designed to fit only over the front of the tooth. They can correct minor cosmetic issues, such as chips, cracks, gaps, discolorations and misalignments. Although they can strengthen the tooth in cases in which the enamel is worn, they are not intended to improve the function of the tooth but are instead considered a cosmetic device.
