Endocrine Disease and Dental Care
Type one and Type two diabetes, hypo- and hyperthyroidism, Cushing disease and Addison disease are considered endocrine diseases and may require careful consideration during dental treatment.
Diabetics who are well-controlled may find it best to schedule any necessary dental treatments first thing in the morning following their insulin injections or when their blood sugars are likely to be higher and they are less likely to experience a hypoglycemic reaction. Because diabetes has been linked with periodontal disease, it is essential to maintain good dental hygiene between dental appointments. Brushing after meals, flossing daily and monitoring teeth for signs or symptoms of gum disease is essential to enjoying good periodontal health. Bleeding gums, inflammation, dry mouth, bad breath or loose teeth can all be indications of a dental problem and need to be evaluated. Thrush is also common in diabetics and may include oral irritation, burning or itching. Our dentist can provide treatments that will alleviate symptoms and combat the infection.
Dental patients with Addisonís disease may need prophylactic steroid treatment before certain dental treatment. Certain complications may be more likely in patients with Cushingís syndrome while those with hyper- and hypothyroid disease will generally not need special precautions. However, patients with uncontrolled hypothyroid disease should not receive anesthetics with epinephrine, which can increase the risk for excessive bleeding and other complications.
