Link between Rapid Weight Gain and Perio Disease in Men
Excess weight can affect your overall health and leave you more susceptible to cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and joint problems. Several recent studies have also linked excess weight to an increased risk of periodontal disease. A new study that was published in the Journal of Dental Research discovered that how fast a man gains weight may have as much of an effect on his gum health as the amount of weight he gains.
The longitudinal study, which used participants in the Veterans Affairs Dental Longitudinal Study, examined waist circumference, arm fat and other measurements in men without diabetes. Data from nearly 900 men was evaluated, and trends over a period of three decades were examined. Men who gained weight rapidly or who experienced a rapid increase in waist circumference were at the greatest risk of developing periodontal disease. The link between weight and periodontal disease was less clear in men who were overweight or obese at the beginning of the study.
Obesity is a chronic inflammatory condition that can adversely affect a patients nutritional status. A healthier diet can help provide essential nutrients while a regular exercise regimen can promote circulation and a healthy body weight. Good dental hygiene habits that include twice-daily brushing and daily flossing are necessary for removing the plaque that causes gum disease. Regular cleanings and checkups are also important.
