Lose Weight for Healthier Gums
Getting to a healthier weight can be a tough job. It requires a commitment to a lifetime of healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle. However, a healthy weight, plenty of regular activity and a healthy diet can really pay off: You will reduce your risk of many chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and adult-onset diabetes. Researchers at Case Western University have also discovered that you will also enjoy improved gum health.
According to the study, fat cells trigger inflammation. The study included 31 patients who were experiencing both obesity and gum disease. Half of these patients who had an average BMI of 39 underwent gastric bypass surgery. The other half had a lower BMI of 35 and did not undergo gastric bypass surgery. Both groups received nonsurgical periodontal treatments that included root planing and scaling and recommendations for home care.
Although both groups of patients experienced improved gum health, those who had undergone the gastric bypass procedure and lost weight experienced improved results and had less plaque, bleeding and periodontal pocket depths. Researchers theorized that the improvement was associated with the decreased number of fat cells, which are linked to increased inflammation.
Eating more fruits and vegetables is a great first step towards achieving a healthier weight and improving gum health. Veggies and fruits can stimulate the gums, include valuable nutrients and provide filling fiber that reduces hunger pangs that could have you reaching for less-nutritious snacks. Lean protein, whole grains and heart-healthy fats can round out your diet. Contact our dentist in Los Angeles to learn about other ways you can protect your gums and reduce your risk of gum disease.
