The Art of Flossing

The Art of Flossing

Almost everyone knows that flossing is an important part of oral hygiene, but few people actually floss on a regular basis and even fewer understand the proper way to floss. Our Los Angeles dentist wants you to be aware of the benefits of flossing as well as the right technique to use when you floss.

During a dental exam, one of the things your dentist is looking for is signs of tooth decay. Tooth decay often begins when bacteria grows in plaque left between the teeth.

A professional dental cleaning can remove a great deal of hidden plaque, but regular flossing is essential to be sure that you do not develop plaque accumulations between your teeth. Daily flossing will give you stronger teeth and gums and fresher breath.

Flossing begins with your choice of floss. Purchase a good quality nylon or plastic floss with a wax coating to ease the flossing process. Take about 18 inches of the floss at a time and wrap it around your forefingers so that an inch or two is taut between your fingers.

Insert this section between two teeth. It does not matter if you begin on the top or bottom, front or back, but you should slide the floss between all of your teeth, moving it up and down to loosen plaque. As the floss between your fingers becomes dirty, you can move to a clean place on the floss by unwrapping it and finding a new spot.

Flossing is one of the most important things you can do to guarantee healthier teeth and a fresh, clean mouth.
