White Fillings Compared to Silver Fillings
Dental fillings are used to treat cavities, or areas of decay in teeth. Our Los Angeles cosmetic dentist offers our patients several filling materials to meet their unique needs, including white and silver fillings. Each type of filling material has its own benefits that must be carefully considered when determining which would be best in a specific situation or person.
Silver, or amalgam fillings have been the traditional filling material. Because they can withstand strong bite forces, they are often chosen for back teeth. They tend to be inexpensive and are generally covered by dental insurance. There has been some controversy as to their safety, but so far, the Center for Disease Control, Food and Drug Administration, and World Health Organization have all determined that amalgam is safe and reliable as a filling material. It does have some drawbacks, however. It can take several hours to harden, and it requires extensive tooth preparation, which requires more tooth structure to be removed. It also contains mercury, a substance that has been linked to several neurodegenerative disorders as well as birth defects.
White, or composite fillings are made of a resin compound and do not contain any mercury. The resulting material is similar in color to your own natural teeth, and it does not require extensive tooth structure to be removed. It is hard almost immediately. While they are strong, they may not be as effective in molars as silver fillings can be.
