Chronic Jaw Pain

TMD is chronic and needs to be diagnosed and treated by a professional. Dr. Bijan Afar and the team at Mid-Wilshire Dental Care understand TMD and the impact it has on our patients’ lives.

TMD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder and is often confused with TMJ, which stands for the joint itself. The TMJ is the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull. You have two, one on each side of your head. Even though it’s hard to diagnose a cause for TMD, the symptoms are painful, chronic, and can make life difficult. Some of the symptoms of TMJ include jaw or ear pain, neck or shoulder pain, chronic headaches or migraines, clicking sounds when you open and close your mouth, difficulty when chewing, and throat pain. TMD needs to be managed over time and requires a knowledgeable team to treat it successfully.

The team at Mid-Wilshire Dental Care in Los Angeles recognizes TMD as a painful, yet manageable condition that needs to be treated long term. That being said, we are able to come up with long-term treatment plans that will help ease your pain and get your life back to normal. Although there is no cure for TMD, it can be treated with various medicines, mouth guards, dental work, and in some more severe cases, dental surgery. If you or your loved one has any symptoms of TMD, give us a call at (323) 931-2000 so that we can help get you a diagnosis. “OMG! I came to this office having been referred by my dental plan. My jaw was aching and I could not stand the pain any longer. Front desk staff are very friendly, got my paperwork and insurance verified in no time. I saw the dentist and later consulted with the oral surgeon. Both very nice, gentle, and considerate of my pain and fear!”
