Problems with Wearing Braces for too Long

Problems with Wearing Braces for too Long

Braces were once designed simply to straighten teeth, but kids and teens today have more options than ever before to personalize their braces for a look thatís fun and individual. Although they are far more attractive than they once were, braces are still not a fashion accessory. Our dentist in Los Angeles warns patients that there are risks associated with wearing cosmetic braces or wearing braces for too long.

  1. Poor dental hygiene
Braces can be quite difficult to clean around. Plaque, debris and oral bacteria can accumulate around the brackets and under the wires. Careful brushing and flossing can help reduce the risks associated with poor dental hygiene, but wearing braces too long can lead to serious dental decay.
  2. Injury
The metal of braces can cut or irritate delicate oral tissues. Most mouth sores are mild in nature, but blood poisoning is a very real risk for the types of sores associated with braces.
  3. Choking
If braces have been applied with low-quality materials or have been damaged, small pieces can break off and become choking hazards, particularly if it happens at night.
  4. Nerve damage
Braces that have been improperly applied can increase the risk of nerve damage. Many nerves are located throughout this sensitive area, and a slip or mistake can lead to permanent nerve damage.

Braces can give you a beautiful smile, but in the wrong hands or when worn too long, they can be dangerous. Contact our dental office today to learn more about your orthodontic options or to schedule a consultation.
