Common Dental Conditions in Children

Dental health problems can cause immediate and long-term damage to childrens smiles. Our Los Angeles dentist recommends beginning dental care early and establishing good dental hygiene habits right from the start to help reduce the risk of these common pediatric dental health problems.

  1. Cavities - Tooth decay is one of the most common pediatric dental conditions and chronic childhood diseases. Once a cavity forms, the tooth should be treated as soon as possible to reduce the risk of developing further complications.
  2. Baby bottle tooth decay - Babies and toddlers often go to bed with bottles, but this is an unhealthy habit that can lead to significant damage to teeth. After feeding your baby, wipe his or her gums or use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean the teeth.
  3. Thumb sucking - One of the most common habits in toddlers, thumb sucking is a natural reflex that begins in the womb. Occasional thumb sucking is harmless, but children who suck their thumbs past the age of four may be at an increased risk of bite abnormalities and other dental health problems.
  4. Avulsion - Avulsion can occur as a result of athletics, collisions, motor vehicle accidents and falls. Acting quickly can prevent the loss of the tooth. Apply clean cotton to the site to help stop bleeding. Only handle the crown of the tooth, and rinse away any dirt or debris. Place the tooth in milk if possible, and seek emergency dental care immediately.
  5. Early tooth loss - When teeth are lost prematurely due to decay or injury, the remaining teeth can shift into the empty space and block the eruption of the permanent tooth. Space maintainers can prevent this shifting and maintain a space for the eruption of the tooth.
