Good nutrition can promote good dental health. A recent study that was published in General Dentistry, which is a peer-reviewed clinical journal associated with the Academy of General Dentistry, reveals that some foods can even protect your teeth from certain dental health problems.

Low oral pH levels increase a persons risk of tooth decay. A pH above 5.5 is linked to a reduced risk of dental cavities. According to the study, cheese and dairy products may be able to reduce your risk of cavities. The study examined 68 patients between 12 and 15 years of age. Participants were divided into groups. One group ate cheese, another group drank milk and the third ate sugar-free yogurt. After their snacks, participants rinsed with water, and their oral pH levels were tested before and after these snacks at 10 minute intervals. The group that consumed cheese experienced the most rapid and dramatic decreases in pH levels. The milk and sugar-free yogurt groups experienced no changes in oral pH.

According to researchers, cheese can stimulate saliva production, which neutralizes acids. Researchers also surmised that cheese has certain compounds that can stick to teeth and protect them from acid attacks. Cheese can play an important role in a well-balanced diet and may even promote good dental health.
