Finding the Right Toothbrush

Finding the Right Toothbrush

Did you know that when it comes to brushing your teeth, not just any toothbrush will do? Although the aisles of your local drug store may be filled with a broad range of styles, shapes, and sizes of toothbrushes, not all are good choices for cleaning your teeth. Our Los Angeles dentist recommends that you replace your toothbrush every three months or when the bristles show wear. Here is what you need to know the next time you shop for a toothbrush:

  1. Look for a soft-bristled brush. Soft bristles are gentle on your enamel and gums but still strong enough to remove plaque and food particles from your teeth.
  2. A brush with a smaller head will usually be easier to maneuver into the tighter areas of your mouth. Choose one with a shape that is comfortable for you. The handle should also be comfortable and easy for you to hold and manipulate.
  3. Pick a power toothbrush if you have limited dexterity or simply prefer them. Electric or battery-operated toothbrushes can remove plaque efficiently and easily. Some studies have even found that power toothbrushes that combine rotating and oscillating action are considerably more effective than manual toothbrushes.

Brushing at least twice daily or after meals and flossing once a day can reduce your risk of gum disease and tooth decay, but regular professional dental cleaning is still necessary. Our dentist can clean plaque and tartar buildup from places you may not be able to reach and check to ensure your oral health is right on track.
