Tips for Preventing Bleeding Gums

Tips for Preventing Bleeding Gums

Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? Bleeding gums is often an indication of gum disease. It is possible to prevent bleeding gums and the gum disease that causes it. Here are some tips.

Brush Your Teeth

Gum disease starts with the accumulation of plaque on our teeth. Bacteria in plaque invades our gums and causes inflammation which makes our gums bleed. Brushing your teeth removes this plaque and harmful bacteria. In addition, brush gently and use a soft toothbrush. Firm brushing can cause gums to bleed.

Floss Daily

Plaque and bacteria accumulate everywhere in our mouths. Brushing cannot reach between our teeth. Flossing cleans these areas, and can even clean below the gumline.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Brushing at home cannot remove tartar from our teeth. A professional cleaning every six months removes this tartar and cleans our teeth below the gumline, keeping our gums healthy.

Eat a Balance Diet

Eating a balanced diet provides your gums with the nutrition they need to stay healthy. Foods rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and magnesium are particularly helpful for healthy gums.

Eliminate Stress

Stress weakens your immune system, which lessens your ability to fight off infections. It also increases inflammation, which can cause gums to bleed.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of gum disease. Quitting can go a long way towards preventing bleeding gums and gum disease.
