Tooth Infection (Abscess): Why You Should Not Wait

A tooth infection starts when bacteria reach the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth, usually through deep decay, a crack, or an earlier injury. The infection can form a pocket of pus (an abscess) at the tip of the root. It will not go away on its own, and it can spread to the jaw, face, or neck.

Antibiotics may be used alongside treatment, but they do not remove the source of the infection. Treating the tooth itself, with a root canal to clean out the infected pulp or an extraction when the tooth cannot be saved, is what resolves it.

Recovery and Aftercare
